How to find the right designer for you

So you’ve decided you want to hire a designer for your project. You’re so excited about your ideas but a little nervous about finding the right designer to work on it. There are handfuls of amazing designers available to work on your project, but how do you know if they’re right for you? Here are a few ways to know if they’re right for you:

Look at their portfolio

Does any of their work resonate with you? Each designer has a signature style, and you can get a really great idea of what that is by looking at their past work. Does it reflect the look you’re trying to achieve as well? If not, then it might be time to look at another designer. If there is work that resonates with you, tell them which projects you love and what parts specifically you’re really attracted to. It can really help them understand why you like their work and how they can bring that into your project. 

PRO TIP: one thing not to do is show them work from other designers that really resonate with you. Copying another designers style isn’t authentic to their work and may even be considered copyright infringement. 

Are they knowledgeable?

Does the designer know what they’re doing? Click over to their blog section if they have one. There should be articles or information about their work and expertise. Read some of their posts. Do they sound knowledgeable about what they’re talking about? Are they helping educate you in design or business? Do you like the information they’re providing?

Do their prices reflect their talent?

Pricing in any industry is the hardest aspect of business. You want to be fairly compensated for your work, but you don’t want to over price. If you’ve found a talented designer that meshes with your style, but they only charge $100 for a logo a red flag would be popping up for me. You want to come up with a budget for your project, and find someone who fits within that. Just because you can get a logo for $5, doesn’t mean you should. (Read more about that here). Prices for a branding project can range anywhere from $500 to $6,000 and up depending on what’s included in your package, the experience of the designer and the quality of the work. The more experience the designer has, the higher their prices will be and rightfully so. 

Find a designer whose prices fit within your budget, and has the style of work you want for your brand.

Book a consultation

Meeting someone face to face is so important. You’re going to be spending a lot of time with your designer, and you want to be sure that you can communicate your business and vision to them.

If your personalities don’t click or it’s hard to communicate with them during the consultation, then it won’t be a smooth ride throughout the project. For me personally, I love meeting my clients face to face because it helps me understand their personality, and their business. We communicate differently through writing and talking. It can be a huge help to me as a designer to hear you explain your business instead of just reading it. 

Ask the designer if they will do a free consultation with you prior to booking. These are often short, under 30 minutes, and it’s just enough time to hear about your business, what you need from the project, and to get to know each other. 

Trust your gut

If you like their work and can afford their prices, but something just feels off about it, then just trust gut and pass on the designer. Or if you just know that they’re the right designer for you, trust that as well and go for it. These are just some guidelines to help you navigate how to find the right designer for you.
